    The Health Benefits of Tomatoes.

Tomatoes are nutrient packed fruits and botanically speaking they are berries. The consumption of tomatoes and tomato extract offers a powerhouse of antioxidants including a good source of vitamin A, C, E flavones, flavonols, carotenoids and glycocides. These juicy fresh fruits are available all year round, although they are in season from July through to September.

Tomatoes originate from Mexico and is thought they were prized by the Aztec civilisations. Spanish explorers brought the seeds back to European shores around the 1500's, although not initially welcomed, they have now become a firm favourite.
The largest producing country of tomatoes is China, followed the the United States, Turkey and Italy.

Lycopene is the carotenoid pigment that is known for its bright red colour on tomatoes however, the colours can vary from red, yellow, orange, green, purple, black and brown. Interestingly small studies have shown that lycopene is more effectively absorbed by the body in the orange tomatoes, compared to those that are red in colour.

There are a huge variety of tomatoes and research suggests that each variety has their own set of nutrients benefits, the varieties with the highest antioxidants are 'Jet Star', 'Fantastic', 'First Lady' and 'New Girl'.

Tomatoes have become synonymous with their association to heart health, with benefits observed in cholesterol reduction, including LDL Cholesterol and triglycerides.
Another way tomatoes benefit heart health is through lowering the risk of atherosclerosis, this is achieved by preventing platelet cells in the blood from clumping together.

It may be surprising to know but tomatoes have been linked to health benefits for your bones, this is believed to be as a result of the excellent antioxidant properties.

Unsurprisingly, tomatoes have been shown to have anti-cancer properties. As we know cancer often starts out from an environment which is high in chronic oxidative stress and inflammation, therefore foods that have high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits help reduce the risk of cancer, tomatoes are no exception.
One cancer widely reported to benefit from the consumption of tomatoes and tomato extract is prostate cancer. Benefits include reduction of developing prostate cancer, as well as the death of cancer cells already formed. Similar findings have also been observed in non-small cell lung cancer.
Ant-cancer benefits have also been found in pancreatic cancer and breast cancer. A reduction in breast cancer has been noted with increased lycopene intake.

Tomatoes rich source of lycopene, lutein and beta-carotene have been shown to have beneficial effects on health health, protecting the eyes from light-induced damage and age-related macular degeneration.

Tomato is a great agent for beauty tips. I often use tomato mask with jojoba oil and tea tree oil to reduce ances.
Mash piece of tomato until smooth.
Mix tomato with 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil and 5 drops of tea tree oil.
Apply to clean skin and leave on 10-15 minutes.
Wash with warm water and pat dry.

I find it fascinating all these everyday foods having such health benefits. I'm really surprised by how good tomatoes are, I used to hate them as a child. I believe they are especially good for you skin.

Thanks Angela for this recipe, I'll give it a go when I get some jojoba.

I love the idea of planting your own tomatoes from the seeds of your existing tomatoes, I will give this a try in the spring.

I used to hate the large ones with the slimy insides, I would only eat the skin. Now, I eat the small ones like sweets.
