    General wellness

I have only ever heard of people going to the chiropractitioner for joint, back and neck problems. However, I got into a conversation with a woman the other day, who said she goes for general wellness.

Has anyone ever heard of this? and Is this a different type of chiropractic treatment?

I believe it is all chiropractic treatment. If you go in with a specialist problem the practitioner will try to sort that out, but if you are feeling fine then the practitioner will just ensure you are keeping in alignment.

It is isaid that when the body is in alignment the energy can flow unimpeded around the body, reducing the risk of stagnation. Which can lead to pain, disease and ill health.

While chiropractic care is physical in its approach, it has underlying principles in Chinese medicine with regards to energy flow around the body.

There is research to suggest that chiropractic treatment for maintaining general health can benefit you digestion, breathing and circulation. As well as aiding in your proper nervous system functioning.

It can help reduce inflammation too, which may go along with the previous post with the idea of stagnation, which leads to inflammation.

I suppose it makes sense, if your body is in alignment your digestion will be improved. As we know digestion is fundamental to health and disease prevention. so maintaining alignment through a chiropractor can help to maintain overall wellness.

Chiropractic care can help lift your mood and reduce your risk of depression, this is mainly down to the limitations and mental anguish that long term chronic pain can bring. By alleviating the pain people find they are much more able to cope with day to day stresses, they are much more able and likely to mobilise and socialise, and they generally have a happier outlook on life.

I found this on a website...

A study designed to test the correlation between chiropractic care and its impact on mental health was published in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research on June 20, 2013. This study cited prior research that showed of the 2818 patients undergoing chiropractic care, 76% reported an improvement in their mental/emotional health. Additionally, these 76% also reported positive changes in stress and increased life enjoyment in the months after receiving chiropractic care. Similar findings have also been reported in the American Journal of Psychiatry. So how can having a properly aligned spine impact your mental health?

How Chiropractic Care Improves Mental Health

    Decreases Mind-Clouding Pain

One reason that chiropractic care can help mental health is be decreasing any physical pain that may be clouding the mind. As anyone with chronic pain can attest to, this discomfort can have a serious impact on mood and mental health. As the spine becomes aligned and pain decreases, anxiety and depression sprouting from pain are proven to lessen throughout treatment. This was further illustrated by a study of participants complaining of anxiety or depression who underwent 12 sessions of chiropractic care. As a result, muscle tension decreased and mental clarity increased as well.

Decreases Chronic Pain, a Common Cause of Depression

When chronic pain is a part of your daily life, not only is it hard to focus but suddenly you are no longer feeling well enough to be social and take part in activities you once loved. Studies have proven that depression occurs at a rate of three to four times higher in those with chronic pain when compared to their healthier peers. The cycle of chronic pain and depression can continue on and on unless it is broken. Regular chiropractic adjustments have proven to decrease pain, depression and anxiety and allow for a healthier (mentally and physically) existence.

Changes Misalignments Which Impact the Nervous System

Our moods are regulated by our body’s chemistry. This chemistry in your organs as well as your brain is all regulated by the nervous system. Misalignment of the spine (specifically the first, second or third vertebrae) can cause pressure in the area of the brain steam which can cause interference neurologically and chemically. Often people turn to medications that are used to alter their brain chemistry but those looking for a non-medication therapy often find that re-aligning these vertebrae can do wonders for their mental state.

This is very interesting, but is the treatment the same as they would normally do for alignment? what happens if you attend your session and your body is in perfect alignment?

Your body always needs slight tweaking due the pressures of our jobs, whether it is sitting at a desk for hours on end, or standing on the spot, carrying heavy bags, bad posture, etc

with wellness you don't attend as frequently as you would for a specific pain, so given that time between appointments adjustments are usually required.

    Choosing the right chiropractor

I am a firm believer in medical technology, but I cannot deny the fact that my sister got cured of lower back pain by the efforts of a chiropractor when we felt disappointed by prolonged use of pain killers by her. Earlier, the orthopaedic specialists could detect no flaw in her bone structure, and the doctors failed in diagnosing the reason behind persistent pain.

There are a lot of chiropractics that are moving away from the idea that their treatment is purely to treat problems, there appears to be a concerted effort to focus on wellness and alignment to remain healthy.

A concept I fully support, however, on a personal note I would love to have regular alignments, but the cost of maintaining this is expensive. It would be great to see this form of treatment available on the NHS as a preventative treatment.
